Off The Hook
We are a group of private investigators, bounty hunters / fugitive recovery agents, and bail bondsmen that have been in this line of work for over twenty five years and have many stories to tell. We have traveled all over the country catching fugitives and bringing them back to have their day in court. With our years of experience we are trying to educate the public about bail and why it is a needed part of our judicial system.

A calm weekend can turn into a full sprint with one phone call, and that’s exactly where this story lands. We start with the lighter stuff, summer weather, fishing plans that get wrecked by wind, and the slow realization that we’re becoming the guys who build raised beds, plant tomatoes, and actually enjoy home projects. From there we take a detour through local chaos: Myrtle Beach’s Carolina Country Music Festival, Luke Bryan passing a tequila bottle down the line, and the internet-famous “Randy” moment that had everyone asking the next day, “How’s Randy feeling?”
Then the tone shifts hard. Rob walks through a fugitive recovery case involving a wanted ECU student we nickname “Roofie Ralph,” accused of drugging women and committing sexual assaults. We explain what it looks like to work a sensitive case the right way: pulling information through the clerk of court, dealing with restricted records, resisting the urge to contact victims directly, and chasing leads that can waste hours if the wrong people are chasing reward money instead of justice.
The break comes through real intel and fast coordination, from an ex-girlfriend’s details to a roommate’s call from Greensboro while the suspect is still in the apartment. We notify Greensboro PD, move in, secure the arrest, and hand him off cleanly, then follow through on a promise to call the victim’s father. If you’re curious about how bail bondsman work, fugitive recovery in North Carolina, and why this process can bring people back to court at zero cost to taxpayers, you’ll get the unfiltered, real-world version here.

Weekend Weather And Backyard Projects
SPEAKER_00It's a real story. But the name stupid.
SPEAKER_02What's happening, everybody? Rob here. Oh, oh, shit. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_01Turn me off. That's not bad. You missed some volume. It's Chad. What's up?
SPEAKER_02I didn't mean to cut you off.
SPEAKER_01That's all good. It's all good. I see how you are.
SPEAKER_02Man, it's all these buttons starting. I know, man. I know, right? Man. Well, I know you don't like saying how's your weekend, but it was a beautiful weekend. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01We had, as you can tell by the tans we have. Yay. It was very nice here. I didn't go out yesterday and the wind was just howling. Yeah, it was kicking a little bit. But it was nice. But yeah, I wanted to do some fishing. It's howling again today. But um, yeah, I got out there and I got back in the little waterways and stuff. And like I throw my rod and it ended up in the weeds, man. You know how it is. Like it just goes back like that, you know, and you throw a line and like the wind catches it, you're reeling it, and all of a sudden you're like going through all the tall reeds and stuff. But anyway, it was still nice.
SPEAKER_02I didn't go fishing. We just went over to the island and kind of hung out all weekend, you know, doing a lot at the house. Um for some reason, man, as I become older, I'm swearing I'm turning into my granddaddy. Like I'm I'm growing stuff at the house. I got grapes, I got blackberries, I got blueberries.
SPEAKER_01It's not a bad idea, you know. Uh the more and more I think about it, you know, old people had it right. Yeah, no, I'm for real. I'm I keep saying it to my kid. Listen to these older people. They've been there, done that, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and you know what? It's funny because I also I bought, well, I did I bought some wood, a bunch of wood to do a bunch of projects around the house. And I've been building these like raised beds so I can plant some some tomatoes, some okra, some squash, and stuff like that. I'm like, what am I doing? I'm turning into an old person.
SPEAKER_01You're setting yourself up for more work, dude. Well, do that.
SPEAKER_02I like it. I kind of like it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_02I kind of like it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I like I like some projects, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and then like I've been doing a lot of flowers and stuff and like tropical stuff in my backyard, so it's been nice. Yeah. Uh so that's you know, when we're not busy, you know, that's what I'm doing. This it is.
CCMF Chaos And Randy’s Tequila Stunt
SPEAKER_02Thank goodness. Speaking of summer, uh, you know, we have this that right down the road here in Myrtle Beach, there's a place called uh CCMF, the Carolina Country Music Festival. Oh, yeah. I've been to it this weekend. I've been to it a few times. Yeah. Uh it's kind of it's really hot. Uh there's no shade out there, and you know, uh it would be a great festival if it wasn't in the right in the middle of Dirty Myrtle. It's horrible.
SPEAKER_01Getting in the middle of a bunch of sweaty rednecks doesn't sound that feeling to be.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I know, right? But I mean, it's it they had they had some good entertaining uh uh artists that were there this weekend. But the big thing about CCMF is Randy. This guy named Randy, right? He was in the front row standing in front of uh Luke Bryan. Luke Bryan and he took a jug of, and I'm sure you guys at home, you can tick tock it and you can see the whole story. It's pretty cool. You gotta check it out. And so Luke Bryan takes a swig of tequila and like hands the bottle down to everybody for everybody else down low to take it.
SPEAKER_01That's nice of him to do, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, they do that. Um, so and it wasn't a whole fifth, it was it was good three quarters. Okay, and Randy got a hold of it, and Randy just says, okay, with it doesn't make a flinch in his face, and he ups this fifth of tequila and downs it, bro, and downs it. And I'm just like, holy shit. And this dude doesn't make a face, he's like, I'm all right. And then Luke Brown's all like, hand me that ball. I'm gonna somebody give me a sharp. I'm gonna sign this for him.
SPEAKER_01He ain't gonna remember this.
SPEAKER_02They're like, yeah, he's like, he he might not feel good tomorrow. So the running junk after that was the next day was where's Randy? How's Randy feeling? How's Randy? You know, Randy's popping up, he's like, I'm fine. Jeez, I'm fine. And everybody's taking pictures, but he's got shirts, you know, they're making shirts with him.
SPEAKER_01Randy. All that practice that redneck had to make it to high levels of alcohol.
SPEAKER_02And then he got on stage and shotgun. He got on stage and shotgun a beer at a Dash's boot from what I've seen the next day. Some chick, I don't know. I don't know, I don't know what she sings. Uh, she's
Jelly Roll In Town And Local Traffic
SPEAKER_02a country.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, maybe we got all that going on downtown Wilmington here. We got, I was coming home this morning. Yeah, we got to uh jelly roll. Jelly rolls here in town. I saw all these like real nice um what are they like RV type things, you know, they roll up in. There must have been 10 of them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Really nice ones. And then right here in front of the hotel, right across from us, is a is one sitting out there. I'm assuming that's his.
SPEAKER_02Uh who knows? Last time he was here, he said while he was on stage, he said he stayed uh in Ricewood Beach. Oh. And he ate at Blueberry Grill. Oh, yeah. Yeah, he said that on stage. And then he said that he also loved the area and that he might, you know, this is where he might retire to. Who knows?
SPEAKER_01We're getting a lot of people that like this area.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we're close, guys.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know. Like Hamston's horrible. The traffic, have you seen that?
SPEAKER_02Have you seen the traffic since they diverted all that crap up there?
SPEAKER_01Oh, that I went up, I went up by your house and went around. I had to go um oh yeah, that's where I put the jet ski in. And uh do that little up thing, go around. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's kind of a pain. It'll be nice when they get finished, though.
SPEAKER_02Well, they need to hurry the hell up. We need it, yeah.
Politics Talk And Public Spaces Cleanup
SPEAKER_02Um but so on the other hand, uh, in the political world, uh, I haven't been really been keeping up with it because you know what? I'm about sick of it. Nope. I'm not I'm not looking at it. I mean, I like it. The only thing that I saw was they were interviewing people in DC about the re-molling and the cleanup that Trump has been doing.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And the lady goes, Well, I really hate to like it, but I hate it, but I like it. Because it is clean. It it does, it is nice. And evidently there's like a lot of people that are um visiting the area, the pool, because it is the reflecting pool. Yeah, the reflecting pool. Right.
SPEAKER_01So they're they're liking these are our national monuments that you know people from other countries come here to see. You would think you would put your best foot forward. Right, right, right, right. Clean them up.
SPEAKER_02I and I saw some interview that where he said he's gonna he's moving on to the World War II memorial. Right. All right, so I I'm I'm hoping yet I'm hoping that it does get cleaned up and and looking presentable, you know, for the next person to come in.
SPEAKER_01Can you liberals say be happy just for like just no let's not pretend it's not Trump, it's somebody else doing it. But like stuff's getting cleaned up and and made nice stuff's getting done. Yeah, like just let it go. It's not Trump. He didn't do it, it's somebody under Trump. But it's not Trump. Does that make you feel better? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Probably not.
SPEAKER_01Probably not.
SPEAKER_02Because they're uh they're unhappy with themselves.
SPEAKER_01Well, they're really gonna be upset about this UFC fight taking place. That's that that's the only thing I've heard things about, you know, people committing to being there, some saying they don't want to be there because of politics tied to it. Who cares? I mean, now y'all gotta remember Biden had the trans naked people running around on the on the White House lawn. Y'all, y'all, y'all haven't forgotten that, have you? It hasn't been that long ago. Yeah. So let's don't forget that.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_01All right. Yep. Yeah, you did have that. So when you got to complain about what you know he's doing, remember the naked trans boob he she's on the on the lawn that was that was being on the White House lawn. Remember that, okay, before you get all upset.
SPEAKER_02Well, they're not going, they don't care.
SPEAKER_01Your panties or your underwear, you know. Oh, whatever. Chill out. So anyway.
SPEAKER_02All right.
Story Time Setup For Roofy Ralph
SPEAKER_02So moving on to this week's story. It's a long, it's not a long story, but it's got a lot to it. It took me a couple of times to go out to get this guy. Okay, we're getting our story. Yeah, we're getting story time. Okay, story time. Story time.
SPEAKER_01So I'm gonna play the tunes, but we're gonna just say story time. I could tell stories. Got too much to tell. Too much to tell us. There you go. Yeah, that'll work. All right, so we can't risk strikes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we don't want to be strike there, YouTube. Uh huh. All right, so question. All right, so here we go. What was the name? What were you gonna name? What we're naming him instead of Wreck It Ralph, it is Roofy Ralph. Roofy Ralph. That's right. Roofy Roofy.
SPEAKER_01All right, yeah. So about a rapist who roofed.
SPEAKER_02His MO was Roofying Young Girls. All right, so he was a young guy himself. He was in he was at um East
Building The Case Without eCourts
SPEAKER_02Carolina University.
SPEAKER_01Popular school here.
SPEAKER_02Very popular. It's a couple hours away.
SPEAKER_01Party school.
SPEAKER_02Uh, I get a phone call from uh from this the bondsman, from a bondsman up there that we did um Jackie, that we do a lot of work for. And he gives me the file, he says, Hey man, I know you can get this guy, but he's being very, very sneaky. He he knows what we're looking for. So you know how it is. When somebody knows that they're being looked after, they they're their their senses are extra high.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02So I I do some research, and this is when Sal was around. And I was like, hey Sal, we need to go to Greenville, go go work on, go work on this uh case. Uh we go up there, and first we go to the clerk's office. This is before eCourts.
SPEAKER_01Go to the clerk's office and for those of you who don't know, eCourts is a new system that we use in North Carolina to look up current cases. It's it's an updated version of this old old system that we had forever. And uh it's we're still like learning. Yes, learning. We've been dealing with it this morning before we did this podcast.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a pain sometimes.
SPEAKER_01It's handy, but it's a there's a learning curve to it.
SPEAKER_02But like well, well, this case, we couldn't get even if we had e-quartz at the time, we couldn't get that information because it's uh it's a sexual assault case. So we go and get the information from the clerk's office. We want to see what's going on.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02So we get some we get some victims' names, we get some, and that's and that's one of the last things we want to try to do is try to reach out to a victim because you don't know, you know, if you know they would want to talk to you or not. And sometimes they're like, we don't want to, you know, it's too much trauma for them. So we understand. So we kind of you know get around that and and look at other things. So we pull the we pull a shuck from the from the clerk's office.
SPEAKER_01Shuck's the thing that's in the clerk's office that contains everything about a case. Correct.
SPEAKER_02And we go sit down and look at it over lunch. Because by the time we get up there and do all that, it's lunchtime by now. And we we have some addresses. We put together, we kind of we're putting together a file right there. And we go start talking. Because he knows we're he knows people are looking for him. So I mean, and we don't have much information. So we go look at past addresses. Well, the past addresses are like these apartments that are like not right on campus, but right next to the college, and they're and they're all like college door, like college living.
Campus Leads And A False ID
SPEAKER_02So they're hard to get into. Right. And we bump into some some girls that knew the guy at this one apartment complex, and they were like, Yeah, we can we can help you because we want to get this dude because he like roofied one of our friends. I'm like, all right, cool, you know, we got somebody helping us now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you want them on your side, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, you know, I don't know how much they really actually knew. I think they were just looking for the reward money because there was a reward out for them, and you know how that works.
SPEAKER_01Right, right.
SPEAKER_02And oh well, I helped to get them, so I get a no, no, no, no, it don't work that way. So we're sitting in this parking lot. By the time this happens, it's dark. It's cold and it's dark. And we're watching, we're watching, and I've been told uh they got up with this guy, the guy come comes to their apartment complex where we're sitting and watching. And when he gets there, we block the car in. And we jump out, we go up to the guy, and it's not him. Of course, we scared the hell out of him. Right. And the dude's scared to death. I mean, we ID him and the whole nine, it's not him. So this is where we get like kind of teed up, feed off with uh these girls that are trying to, they're saying they're trying to help, but they're they're like being on a wild goose church. Yeah, they're being they're wasting their time. Yeah. So we kind of leave them alone and they're and they keep calling us, hey, we can no, that's no, we can we can make it right, we can make it right, and we're like, shut up, go away. We go to another apartment complex where some other people this boy's well known because evidently, like so in at the college at ECU, like if something happens, like like Roofy Ralph here, Roofy, what's his name?
SPEAKER_01Roofy Ralph. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Roofie Ralph. Okay. When something like this happens, they send a mass text alert out to everybody as a uh attends college there. So everybody gets this alert. That's a lot of eyes, man. That should be helpful. It is. So we're we're bumping in people that's that's that knows them or seen them, whatever. And uh he was like, Look, uh the these the
The Ex Girlfriend’s Tip And A Wild Chase
SPEAKER_02these people said we can get you in contact with his ex-girlfriend. I said, All right, cool, that's what we want. Contact the ex-girlfriend. Ex-girlfriend goes, Yeah, he's he's around, but he's hiding from y'all because he knows somebody's looking for him. But he doesn't know what we look like. Right. Because he's thinking that we look like Jackie, but we're not. You know, different complex.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02He's dark. So I'm like, all right, where is he at? And she says, Well, he's driving around in this type of car. He she gives us the the car description, license plate, everything. All right. So I'm like, all right. She's she's like, I've got live location on him right now. Sweet. I'm like, all right, word. This is what this is what's gonna happen. We're gonna we're gonna chase him down.
SPEAKER_01You're gonna hang out with us while we ping that phone.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. So she she's giving, and we're and and we're trying to follow this guy where he's going at, but he is. I don't know how in the hell Greenville PD didn't stop him. Because he's flying through stoplights, and we're not like we're trying to figure out where he's at.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And we're just driving around and and following his, you know, his breadcrumbs. And this dude's all over the place. He's gonna hurt
Calling The Victim’s Father For Help
SPEAKER_02somebody. So you know what? I was like, you know what? It's late. It's like midnight, one o'clock in the morning. We've been there on this thing all day and all night. We're tired. We'll back off because he's he's scared right now.
SPEAKER_01Did you stay in Greenball?
SPEAKER_02No. We we we we went home.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02So we go home, we regroup, we start making phone calls. And like I said at the beginning of the story, we didn't really want to watch reach out to victims. But what I started doing is doing some research on the victims. And what I come to find out is one of them, father, is an attorney in favor. So I kind of I reach out to him. I'm like, hey, bud, I tell him who I am. I'm slowly my bondsman here in North Carolina. We're we're we're trying to get this guy. You're on his side now.
SPEAKER_01Yes. And you want him on your side.
SPEAKER_02I said, so can you tell me anything that's or what happened? Uh, because we we've got some of the stuff from the shuck, but we don't know 100% what's going on. Right. And he said, Well, he roofies young girls at the college and then rapes them. I said, Well, this is horrible. You know, this is like, and he did it to his daughter. And he was mad as fire.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, that guy would get hurt.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, he would. Yeah. And he goes, I'll help you do whatever you got to do to help find the guy. I said, Okay, well, I don't want to talk to your daughter because it's too traumatizing. I was like, you talk to her and just give me some information if you can get if you can. Yeah. Don't, don't be, you know, don't approach. Yeah, don't don't act like you have to, but yeah, I want to get him just as bad as you do. So a couple of days goes by, he calls me and says, Hey, look, you know, word is that he's he's left Pitt County because it's too hot. I'm like, where would he go? Well, his family is back up in the Greensboro area, Burlington, Greensboro area. So I have a feeling that's where he went to. And that's what the attorney told me. He goes, I think he went back towards his family somewhere.
SPEAKER_01Greensboro.
SPEAKER_02I know, right? Ugh, it's horrible. So a couple weeks go by, we we kind of leave alone to see if we get any information from all the all the people we've got, you know, we've got feelers out on, right? Yep, right. Nothing. Uh we get nothing. So me
The Greensboro Lead Goes Cold
SPEAKER_02and Sal are up in Roxboro, North Carolina, one day on a different case. We up there, we've handled something in Raleigh, and then from Raleigh went to Roxboro or handle it, and we're done in Roxboro, and we're on our way back towards towards Durham. Yeah, and we're literally about the cross over I-85. I get a phone call. Hey, is this uh Mr. Allen? I say, Yes, it is. Can I help you? And she goes, Yeah, this is such and such roommate. I'm here in Greensboro, and the Rufie Ralph. Was he there? He's in the bedroom in the back trying to hook up with my friend.
SPEAKER_01Oh, and I was and I said how far away are you?
SPEAKER_02We're literally 40 minutes at that. And I was like, oh. Of course, it took us a little bit, it was a little bit faster there. Yeah. And I was like, I looked at Sal, I said, Sal, make it right right here at this light. I mean, look, we were literally coming up on the light. I said, make it right, get on 85, get towards Greensboro now. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Let's get it.
SPEAKER_02And he was like, he's like, okay, okay, well, I'm gone. And dude, he dude, Sal, he's he was an idiot on the driving, man. He was harsh. But we're getting it, right? And I'm on the phone with her the whole time. She
A Surprise Call Puts Him In A Bedroom
SPEAKER_02goes, I can keep him. We will keep him here. We know y'all coming. Don't worry about it. I said, all right, cool. I make a phone call to Greensboro PD. Hey, this is such such. I'm on my way. Uh, I'm going to go get this guy. Here's the case number. He has multiple warrants. They verify all that. I said, when we once we get him, we're going to this apartment complex. So we'll be giving you a call to pick him up from us. All right, cool. No problem. So I mean, we're and I'm I'm calling the girl back. She goes, yeah, he's still bad. He's still trying to mac on her. He's trying to be smooth. He's trying to play a game, right? I don't know what this dude's issue was, but man, he didn't like us. So we're we're going up in this apartment complex and we come up in this thing hot and we get out. And I see the girl I'm on the phone with. She's outside. And she's like, second floor. As soon as you go in, go straight back. It's the last bedroom on the right. He's back there. You just go get him. I'm like, all right, sweet. So we go up. I'm running up the steps.
SPEAKER_01What's what's Wrecky Ralph look like?
SPEAKER_02Oh, he looks like a little uh he literally looks like a little frat boy.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02Little white little frat boy. I mean, he he won't he won't know he wasn't big at all. Maybe 5'10, uh Buck 60. You know, he he 20 years old. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Got it. Just trying to make a good visual what you're going into.
SPEAKER_02So in case y'all didn't know, if uh if y'all haven't seen any one of the episodes that we had with Sal, Sal's a big dude. Yeah, he's short, but he's about that, he's about that wide. He's he's stout, bruh, and and he'll he'll work you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So it's funny. So we we get to the part we're going up the steps. I'll follow up the steps because I'm going so fast. I follow up the steps. I start laughing. I'm like, you know, Sal's like, get up, get up, get up. I'm like, so all right, so we get up and we go through, and we're
The Grab And The Hard Truth Outside
SPEAKER_02quiet as can be, and we're going it, we're going in and we're going, we're beaming straight to this bedroom. And when we come in there, dude, he's laying on the bed old Mr. Suave talking about, hey girl, and we jump in. Sal jumps like a like like a grasshopper and jumps right on top of him. And I'm like, and I grab one of his hands, one of his arms, and this dude is shitting his pants. He has no idea what's going on. Right. The girl knew because they were they were in cahoots. We paid him, we paid him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And and so we get him, we go outside, and with these type of cases, man, where we know that he's hurt a lot of people doing some stupid shit like this. We we kind of I don't want to really talk to him.
SPEAKER_01That's a dangerous dude, you know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't want to talk to him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And and he was like, I said, man, I said, you could I said, that night when we were trying to find you, I said, did you know we were looking for? He goes, no, he goes, man, I just that's the way I drive. I was like, dude, you're gonna kill somebody. But but you don't care because you're roofy and girls. And and you're taking something from them that they can't get back. Like, you are a disgrace. Sit down, shut up, and keep your mouth shut and don't say a damn word. So he's like, all right, cool. He was he doesn't like
Handoff To Police And Calling Dad
SPEAKER_02people like this, they don't say they won't talk back to you much.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02We call Greensboro PD. Evidently, there's multiple calls coming in because somebody saw us jumping out the truck. We had we you know, we had vest on and everything, right? And everybody saw us running in, so they they already automatically called.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but you did the good thing at the beginning. You let them know you're gonna be in the yeah. So I mean that's the smart thing.
SPEAKER_02So by the time we get on, I get on the phone with Greensboro, they're like, Yeah, we already got somebody already, we're already gonna call. I'm like, all right, cool.
SPEAKER_01We're we're aware, yeah.
SPEAKER_02So he comes up, he's like, Yeah, he has already looked the warrant up, you're good to go, we'll take him. Nice. I said, sweet. So we took it, and it was a $25,000 bond. Right. And so what I did, go let's go back to the the attorney, the father. Yeah. I said, because he gave me the information to these girls up in uh like Greensboro. He's the one that connected me. I told him, I said, look, I said if I get him in handcuffs, I promise you, I will call and let you know. You'd be the first person I call. He said, Thank you, I appreciate that. And that day when we got him, after we handed him off to Greensboro PD, I called, I called Daddy. I said, hey, I got him.
SPEAKER_01Send him a picture.
SPEAKER_02Yep, send him a picture. He's he's on the way, he's on the way to the jail right now. He ain't getting out. He wasn't getting out for a while.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02He had other charge. He had like like six more sexually like sexual battery cases against him. So that was just kind of a look of the draw with that. We were up in Roxboro when we got the phone call. Right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
