Off The Hook

Side Chicks, Stolen Guns, and the Art of Fugitive Apprehension

Chad and Rob Episode 1012

Send us a text

Ever wondered what really happens when bail recovery agents corner a fugitive? Chad and Rob pull back the curtain on the gritty realities of bounty hunting with the riveting story of Terrence , a high-risk fugitive they tracked down in Cleveland.

After receiving a call from a bail agent struggling with a $50,000 skip, Chad and Rob fly to Ohio and immediately get to work. Their investigation reveals a critical weakness in Terrence's life—a scorned "side chick" eager to help capture him in exchange for some cash. The tension builds as they stake out a daycare center where Terrence is expected to pick up his child, strategically positioning themselves to intercept him before he can endanger any children.

The moment of apprehension crackles with danger as they drag Terrence from his car, only to watch a loaded, stolen firearm slide across the pavement. The discovery of significant quantities of cocaine in the vehicle underscores the high-stakes nature of their work—this wasn't just a bail jumper, but someone deeply involved in dangerous criminal activities.

Beyond the adrenaline-pumping narrative, Chad and Rob offer valuable insights into the strategic thinking behind successful fugitive recovery. They discuss the importance of local knowledge, the financial considerations that shape their operational decisions, and how they collaborate with other recovery agents across state lines. Their candid conversation demolishes Hollywood myths about bounty hunting while highlighting the very real risks and rewards of the profession.

Whether you're fascinated by true crime, interested in criminal justice, or simply enjoy authentic stories from the trenches, this episode delivers raw, unfiltered access to a world few ever see. Listen now to understand why Chad and Rob confidently warn fugitives everywhere: "Don't run, we'll find you. Guaranteed."

Speaker 1:

When people are released from jail, they have the responsibility to appear in court, but some of these people choose to go on the run.

Speaker 2:

They go back home to mommy.

Speaker 1:

And that is when these guys come into the picture. So sit back and listen to the Off the Hook podcast with Chad and Rob Very fine people on both sides. These are real stories, but the names have been changed.

Speaker 2:

What's up everybody? Rob, here I'm Chad. What's up? Oh man, you think after a while they already know who we are. But you know, we're hoping everybody's getting to know us. Yeah, I'm hoping so In different places. It's going to be an exciting week coming up because we're going down to Greensboro.

Speaker 3:

Oh, yeah, yep, yep, yep. For the North Carolina Bell Agent Association, Yep so y'all come check us out, all you bell agents listening.

Speaker 2:

Bring your wildest story with you Okay?

Speaker 3:

Yep, we want to interview you for a podcast later.

Speaker 2:

So for a few weeks we're going to have nothing but stories from other people.

Speaker 3:

If the plan goes according to schedule.

Speaker 2:

Yes, if the plan goes, yep.

Speaker 3:

So grab your drink, sit down with us and tell us your tall tales. Yeah, I had to make sure that my phone was on buy rate, so funny. This morning I, um, I have trouble with our internet here at the office and, um, I had to call at&t to get help and you know they. I got passed off, of course you know, to several people. Finally, I got this nice lady and, uh, turns out she's from greensboro oh, she's not from ind.

Speaker 3:

She was not from India, I was, so surprised and I got talking to her and she saw you know the name of the business on the account and how long have you been bail binding? You know I said 26-some years. Oh yeah, we got a family member that's a bail bondsman and they tell us all these stories.

Speaker 2:

and she's got family law enforcement stories and she's got family law enforcement and you know, she just totally just wanted to talk about that. I think I walked in like on the last bit of the conversation.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, it's kind of funny, you know just, people want to hear. She's like, yeah, he tells us all these crazy stories. I'm like, yeah, you've been in it for a while, you're gonna have them check the podcast out. Yeah, so I told her. So she's even talking about her and her husband stopping by that because they there, they're like we might stop by and see y'all.

Speaker 2:

That'd be cool, all right, cool my.

Speaker 3:

AT&T internet. Lady Nice, to see you Right All right, oh man, I tell you what.

Speaker 2:

So we're going to get into this here in a minute, but we want to talk about Ozzy. But this past weekend my band played at the trailer bar down in Topsail.

Speaker 3:

Huge blow to the Gen X group with Ozzy passing man it sucks.

Speaker 2:

We rocked it and we don't have any songs to play by Ozzy, but if we did, we would have.

Speaker 3:

Everybody assumes Ozzy's just going to continue because he's kind of like Keith Richards, right?

Speaker 2:

I think Keith Richards is actually dead. I think it's just the drugs that he's done all of these years is keeping his body going Well.

Speaker 3:

Ozzy too. But what's crazy is he did his farewell tour. They said 13 days. Was it 18 days before he passed away?

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

Which is crazy yeah, it is, and so that really truly was his farewell to everybody. But all the money that was raised I heard it was in the neighborhood of $190 million- raised.

Speaker 2:

That's a lot of money for my concert.

Speaker 3:

And he did not take a dime of that. It all went to Parkinson's research development.

Speaker 2:

Well, that's what he had. I'm hoping that it does something. I hope that $190 million actually helps.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I that it like it does something. I hope that 190 million actually helps. Yeah, I mean that's he went out, went out with class.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, he did you know, man? You see all the people that were playing too.

Speaker 3:

That was just amazing, I saw Zach wild, you know, and I just saw him with Metallica Pantera. He played for Pantera, I guess switches back and forth.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, he's one of the I would say one of the top three best guitars. Yeah, he's iconic. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3:

I saw the drummer for Pantera was playing. For who was it? Like Slipknot or one of those bands?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, they all kind of hang out with each other.

Speaker 3:

Just kind of yeah, switch around. So Zach was with Ozzy before he went with Pantera.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

But anyway.

Speaker 2:

Anyway, so on to worldly news. Yeah, Did you see where Trump has made some really good trade agreements with Japan?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I saw Japan good trade agreements with Japan. I saw Japan. I think it's over half a trillion dollars that's going to be bringing into her economy. That's pretty awesome.

Speaker 2:

This is what I'm thinking, this is my opinion.

Speaker 3:

You're entitled to one.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm entitled to one. I think he's doing a great job by doing these trade agreements with all these smaller countries that we've not done business with before, because China's had that market over there, right. So, china being difficult the way they are, ok, we'll go somewhere else. And they did, and he did. He went to the Philippines, japan, he's made all these trade agreements and re-advised the tariff deals and the whole nine to where it's good for us, because we're the number one top economy in the world.

Speaker 2:

And when you've got these little countries that are poor because they're not involved, trump goes in and says hey look, we'll open up your markets to us, we'll buy stuff from you, you buy stuff from you, you buy stuff from us. This is what the deal is. It's going to help that country thrive even more and it's going to put some pressure on China to hey look, maybe we not need to be so hard on the US. I think it's an excellent strategy by the Trump administration I mean I'm not 100% excellent strategy by the Trump administration. I mean I'm not a hundred percent. Like right, like an agreeance with Trump, okay, but I'm not a but not a it's like what you said, it's a strategy.

Speaker 3:

You know, at least he has a strategy. At least I didn't even have a. He was on ambient. Oh since we're talking about current events, man. Oh yeah, Did you catch the Hunter Biden interview.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, good God Is he helping the Democratic side, or what man Dude did you know that crack is clean.

Speaker 3:

I did not know. Oh my God. He broke it down on how to make it and how clean it was.

Speaker 2:

God, what in the hell is going on?

Speaker 3:

If there is any doubt in your mind there should be none now.

Speaker 2:

All right, so did you see how he taught his mannerisms? It was kind of like his dad and he kind of was all over the place. I'm like, wow, was Biden smoking crack too? Was that his?

Speaker 3:

cocaine. I was listening to that group this morning on Fox radio. It had this, this like the round table of of different people, and it had Mr Wonderful.

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah.

Speaker 3:

And I love, I love his, his take, because he lives in that world of you know, surrounded by liberals that you know can't stand Trump because everybody's opposed to he's just Trump. But he understands it from a business standpoint, right, and he was talking about the whole Hunter Biden interview and he's like you know, he branded it well because he's like thinking from a business standpoint and he's like you know, I think I'll try it.

Speaker 2:

It was just funny to hear him like you know jokingly like say it like that but I don't know what. I don't know what Democrat Party is. Now Gavin Newsom is starting.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, they shot him down quick because what he's done with california?

Speaker 2:

exactly, but here's the thing that he's trying. He's trying really hard yeah, he's they.

Speaker 3:

What was it? One of them said he's like the uh, the kid that's running for class president, that like stayed up all night and made little bracelets to hand out for you to vote for him, but you just, he's just not gonna get it I don't trust him as far.

Speaker 2:

I don't trust him at all, man, I don't trust him at all. I mean, look what I mean, like, like you said, look what california's turned into the biggest, biggest.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I mean he's running that in the ground. I mean he's greasy. I mean he's good lookinglooking greasy guy.

Speaker 2:

But other than that, I think he just says what you want to hear. In the background, like most politicians, they're like oh, we're not going to do that, we're going to take the money and put it in our pockets.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, and you got to worry about that on both sides. Yeah, you do, you know, but I think he's shown his true colors and he's not going to do anything positive. Yeah, I'm kind of over it, the Democrat. What they said is the Democrats need to dig out somebody unheard of. Nobody knows about.

Speaker 2:

You mean, aoc is not a good? No, I wish they'd pick her.

Speaker 3:

I wish they'd. They need to dig up somebody. They need to find them an old Bill Clinton somewhere. Yeah, that's unheard of, that has moral semi-morals, but would start their whole thing over.

Speaker 2:

You remember Ross Perot? Oh, but he was an independent.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, but but would would start their whole thing over. You remember Ross Perot, oh but he was an independent.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, but he was independent. But you find still, you find somebody like that.

Speaker 3:

He came out of the woodwork, you know. But everything dude was running for is relevant today.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

They still make. Um, they still pull up comments that he made back then that are relevant today. Wow, still pull up comments that he made back then that are relevant today. Wow, so dude was ahead of his time, like he was a little crazy little Yosemite Sam, little guy.

Speaker 2:

but what about? Okay, so what about Obama and this whole thing that just came out? Man? I mean man, are they going to do?

Speaker 3:

anything. That's the prop. That's the thing. Listen, you know I'm being fair to the other side. Right now the the timing of this, I know, coming out about and then they're, they're harking over this uh epstein list.

Speaker 3:

You know the timing is uncanny in my opinion, you know, for this to be brought up out of nowhere, yeah so, but I don't care like I think that thing needs to be brought up out of nowhere, yeah so, but I don't care Like I think that thing needs to be really now, in hindsight. Now I heard someone else say it might be brilliant play on his behalf. He could be getting everybody worked up about this and then boom and then okay, here you go, Boom, you know, and then it once again, it's a dead end yeah them.

Speaker 3:

You know it could be, I don't know, we'll see. I would like to see it or not see, I don't. I don't know. But I would like to see you know this list and how they're going to determine you know who's, who's really a bad person, that went there and who well, you know how, you know how the court stuff works, all right.

Speaker 2:

So we, we know how the court stuff works somewhat. Yeah, so epstein's wife, girlfriend, whatever she was giselle, maxwell maxwell.

Speaker 3:

You got it wrong on the last podcast, but I listened to it yesterday. You said max maxine waters, oh yeah that was. That was a mistake oh sorry.

Speaker 2:

Well, she needs to go to jail. Yeah, she does need to go to jail, but for different reasons reasons. So all right. So this chick right. She's sitting in prison right now. They had to have evidence to put her there. Why can't we see it?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, exactly, yeah Again. I think the names are so large on this that they would cause a big disruption.

Speaker 2:

Who cares?

Speaker 3:

I don't really care, but I think that's their, their fears. You know people with with a lot of money that can, that can tie up court systems for decades.

Speaker 2:

Well.

Speaker 3:

I could be wrong, but that's my guess.

Speaker 2:

Well, yeah, who knows, who knows?

Speaker 3:

I mean powerful people. You know you're talking about Prince Charles or one of the other guys. I don't keep up with the royal shit. I don't even care, I've heard that one of them was on it, and probably some high up people.

Speaker 2:

You know what If we did something like that? Oh yeah.

Speaker 3:

You're not above us. We're just regular people, but so are you. You just make a lot more us. Yeah, we're just regular people, but so are you. You just make a lot more money.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and half of you are damn crooks. Speaking of crooks, we got one to tell you today.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, man, let's get to it.

Speaker 2:

So of course he was on the run, but before we get started, this is the story of Terrence Ready the run. But before we get started, this is the story of terrence ready. All right, there you go, that's it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah you, ohio, I got a um phone call from dana dana ac and uh, yeah yep, I got a call from her needed some help up there. Uh, and this is before sal moved down here, so he was still up there at the time. So me and matt decided to go up there and help her. There was a couple of pickups.

Speaker 3:

But you still knew Sal at the point in time, right, right, yeah, okay.

Speaker 2:

So we get on a plane, we come up there, she puts us up in a nice hotel. You know, we're up there for a week because we also had to go to Toledo and we didn't have no look in Toledo, but Toledo is a crap hole. So but when we first got up there, uh, we go to the office and sit sit down with Sal. This is when I first, like like, did something with Sal. It's been years ago. We get up there. It was like a 50,000 that was on the run and it could not figure it out, could not figure it out.

Speaker 2:

So we get up there and we're going through the file with them and we start doing our online stuff and we see that he has a side chick. We find this out. So of course, we pull that information and get up with the side chick. Now, for you folks at home, for you folks at home or wherever you're at, a side chick A side chick is somebody you're seeing when you have a wife or a girlfriend or whatever on the regular, and then, all of a sudden, you got this chick on the side right Side chick Definition is pretty explanatory. Yep, pretty much so. But this side chick hated the baby mama Damn. Yeah, they were just back and forth.

Speaker 3:

That's gold to find right there, oh man.

Speaker 2:

When we found this out, we're smiling ear to ear, we look like the Grinch from Christmas. Because it was like, yes, so we meet with her. We're like, all right, look, you want this dude called she's like yeah, because he's, he's, he's been blowing me off and and he won't give me money and hold on right. So I said, okay, cool, this is what we're gonna do. We'll give you a little bit of money and she goes yeah, we'll do it, okay, cool a double win so he's out.

Speaker 2:

He's out gangbanging, he's dealing drugs the whole time. Right that day we found out, after doing some investigation work, we found out where his kids go to daycare at and that he had to pick his kids up from daycare that day. We didn't know what time, though, and the the side chick was saying hey, look, he's sharing his location with me. He's on and off showing location with me. I said, all right, well, we'll just keep an eye on it. Let us know. We're going to go check some other places out that he was at and he's been at.

Speaker 2:

So we go by, don't see his car. We know what car he's driving now and we know he's with somebody. So we have to. You know, when we go after somebody like this who's gangbanging and is dealing drugs, most likely 99% of the time they're going to have a gun on them. So you've got to be careful on you know what you do and how you do it, especially in the city, in Cleveland.

Speaker 2:

I don't know Cleveland that well Sal does. So you know we got. You know I have to take advice from, like Dana Sal, all the people from that office to know you know what area of town. How bad is this area and it's pretty bad. So we were like, alright, we've got to take precautions every which way. Everybody wear a vest, everybody be ready, eyes glued the whole night. So we go by a couple places Not there, looking for this, and then all of a sudden he starts sharing his location with a side chick, nice and she was on the phone with him and he was saying yeah, I'll go pick up my baby, and as soon as I go pick up my baby, I'll go drop my baby off with baby mama, and then I'll come meet up with you so I can give you some money.

Speaker 3:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

Okay, cool, cool, cool, right? Well, of course he's never on time. You know how that rolls Well he's got a busy schedule. Yeah, he's got a lot of cocaine to throw out there, a lot of heroin. You know a street pharmacist? Yes, pretty much. So we go sit in, we find out which daycare it is. Uh-huh, and this is after a bunch of social media search gotta be careful going on those, those grounds yeah, it was like in a strip mall.

Speaker 2:

It's weird. It was like a strip mall had like grocery store beside it, like a hot, like a haji grocery store next door. It was weird. We don't have them down here like that. I wouldn't want to send my child there, I'm not sure.

Speaker 2:

Okay, the rules might not apply there as they do here, and I think there was like a place next door where you know you get infusions done if you have like a kidney failure. Oh, dialysis, dial, dialysis. There you go. Yeah, it was dialysis place next door. So I'm like, all right, you know. So we go sit in this parking lot and we're strategic, strategically placed up just in case he wants to park somewhere or park right in front of it. Right, well, I will, partnered on one side of the parking lot. Who all was with you? It was me, matt and Sal and then one of Sal's guys.

Speaker 3:

So Matt's a character that we had years ago. That was here briefly. Yeah, I think he's up in Virginia now. Yeah, he used to play for the Panthers for a little short period of time.

Speaker 2:

Yep, I think his father passed away. So, matt, I know you're watching. Hey, bud, I hope everything's going well up there in Virginia for you, so got to tell this one. So I think it was me and Matt in the truck and Sal and another guy in his truck. Okay, and we're parked on either side, gotcha. So you got eyes on both sides, dude.

Speaker 3:

And we're parked on either side, gotcha, so you got eyes on both sides.

Speaker 2:

Dude. We waited for hours because he wasn't on time. He was all over the place Because we had talked about just chasing him around on the GPS. But I said no, because we're going to waste time. And what happens if he gets here before we do? We miss him, weren't you?

Speaker 3:

getting updates from the side chick.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we were. But the problem is, if he would have showed up and like, grabbed the kid and took off, we would have missed our chance. Yeah, so we didn't want to miss our chance, so we stayed there.

Speaker 3:

And you don't want to get him with the kid.

Speaker 2:

Exactly, we didn't want to get him. We wouldn't get him before he got the kid. So we're waiting in his parking lot and the side chicks all right, he's.

Speaker 2:

He's literally a mile down the road and we're like all right, boys get ready, we're finally coming it's finally coming, okay, and it was a little white four-door like toyota corolla, avalon type car, you know, and he comes pulling up as soon soon as we see him. He actually does not get in a parking spot, he pulls up right in front of the front door of the place and we're like time to hit it, block him in, let's go. So we're coming up, I'm coming up, I'm coming up to the front of the car. I block him in there. Sal comes into the back, we all get out and we run over there and by the time we get to the car he has no idea what the hell's going on. He hasn't even got out the car yet, oh, and we're dragging him out and when we drag him out, a gun comes out and slides across the pavement.

Speaker 2:

I grabbed a gun, I cleared a gun and it was hot, it was loaded, ready to rock and roll, and I think it was his brother that was sitting in the passenger seat, okay, and we yanked him out like we. We patted everybody down. There was so much cocaine in that car I I didn't want a part of it. I was like man, I'm not here for this, I don't care about this, and neither does anybody around here. I said so the best thing for you to do is get in his car and leave. So that's the brother. We already had our guy in handcuffs. So the gun Sal knows people up there because that's where he's at. He takes the gun to the police station and turns it in, of course stolen. So when we get this guy, he's like where in the hell did y'all come from? I didn't even see. I was like so our plan worked, cause you're always worried about yeah, you're always worried about it going sideways.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean he could have, you know he could put it out and put it out, or he could have freaking stepped on the pedal. Kids around and he didn't want that mess. But by the time we we jumped on him so fast he had no idea what was going on. None. So we got him in handcuffs, we put him in Sal's truck, Sal takes him down to booking downtown Cleveland and the baby's mama, his girlfriend or wife, whatever girlfriend, the one he was- picking the kid up for yeah, yeah, she was working there.

Speaker 2:

I didn't know this, but she worked there when? At the, at the daycare.

Speaker 3:

Oh, the daycare.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, and she'd come out and she was like what's going on? We told her hey look, he missed miss cordy pos of a ex-boyfriend or whatever. Yeah, and so and she goes, well, how'd you know? How'd you know where? Well, he was coming up and I was like it's what we do, I don't know what we do. And she goes it's got to be. It's got to be that damn girl he'd be messing with.

Speaker 3:

I'm like I have no idea what you're talking about cannot confirm or deny. I plead the fifth on that one uh.

Speaker 2:

So we go meet up with the the side chick, yeah, pay her, yeah, and then, uh, we stay there for a night. I think we um with subject?

Speaker 3:

no, no the way you worded it sound like you stayed there. No, no, no, no, no she was.

Speaker 2:

No, I stayed looking, looking, but no, that that night you know, you know when you get, when you finally get somebody and you work all day like that, you're, you're just exhausted and then the adrenaline rush stops and you're like oh right, so of course me and Matt go get something good to eat and just crash out. It's a reward time, yeah yeah, yeah, go get some good to eat. And then we had to go to Toledo.

Speaker 1:

That sucks yeah.

Speaker 2:

And Toledo is horrible. Yeah, he thought he thought Cleveland was bad or Detroit, Mm-mm, Toledo's bad. Everything's there's. There's nothing there, Not nothing Like. All the houses are vacant boarded up.

Speaker 3:

Is that one of those places that lost industry and kind of just went like Detroit? I went to Detroit and it was like that Abandoned houses and stuff.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we walked into a. I remember when we were in Toledo, me and Matt would get out. We had a vest on and as soon as we get out the place was busy. As soon as we got out, people scurry, Everybody gone.

Speaker 3:

I was like man did we. Everybody gone. I was like man, do we Everybody got warrants, Everybody got warrants Got to go.

Speaker 2:

So that was the story of Terrence in Cleveland, ohio. Cool yeah, that was a wild time. I don't know why. I just thought of that I had come out yesterday, I was like what can we do for Bob? I was like oh, that's a good one.

Speaker 3:

Did I miss the part? Where did you? Did I miss the part? Did you? Where'd you take Terrence?

Speaker 2:

Sal took him to booking.

Speaker 3:

Oh, I knew he took the gun. I didn't know he took the guy.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, he took the guy too Cause. Yeah, we were just helping Gotcha, but um, but yeah right on.

Speaker 3:

Well, we got one that we're working on right now. Yes, sir, that doesn't. Well, it wasn't going to be us going up there, but it don't look like we're going to no, we're just going to orchestrate it from here yeah, I called.

Speaker 2:

So I called leland. Well, I texted leland yesterday morning. Yeah, leland chapman, yeah, and I said, hey, man, I know you do a lot of work up in michigan. Uh, you gotta uh your boy up there, john. I was like, can you have him call me? He was like, all right, cool, where where he called me yesterday, like yesterday afternoon late, he goes. Hey man, sorry to call you so late, he goes, but I'm in Hawaii.

Speaker 3:

I'm like, oh, we're working tirelessly on this and um I can guarantee you uh, the bondsman is going to be very happy. Very well, don't count your chickens.

Speaker 2:

Well, this is true, but but it sounds very promising very promising. I'm hoping so. Fingers crossed anyway, right.

Speaker 3:

Well, that would be great. Well, we can wrap that up. Yeah, oh great, well, we can wrap that up, yeah, oh, that'd be a, that'd be a good episode to talk about. That'll be a different, a different approach to doing something, you know, but still, work has to be done on both ends to make it happen, and the whole reason.

Speaker 2:

You're trying to be, you know, cost effective. Yeah, you're trying to be cost effective. You're trying to not, you know, you're trying to take care of your client, because your client's going to use you again. So we're trying not to, you know, because they have to pay expenses and we're not trying to have the expenses so high. Yeah, so we're doing a really good job at it.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, for the cost of the bond, how much it would cost them to give us plane tickets, the fee that we need to make it worth our while Hotel it's going to be expensive.

Speaker 2:

You know it. Fee that we need to make it worth our while. Hotel, all that, it's going to be expensive.

Speaker 3:

You know, it's better for us to do it this way.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

And we've got somebody that's in that neck of woods who's familiar.

Speaker 2:

Who lives in that neck of woods Right.

Speaker 3:
