Off The Hook
We are a group of private investigators, bounty hunters / fugitive recovery agents, and bail bondsmen that have been in this line of work for over twenty five years and have many stories to tell. We have traveled all over the country catching fugitives and bringing them back to have their day in court. With our years of experience we are trying to educate the public about bail and why it is a needed part of our judicial system.
Off The Hook
More Than Money: The Hidden Truth Behind Bail Bonds
The unseen heroism of bail bondsmen takes center stage in this riveting episode that peels back the curtain on what really happens when someone's life is upended by false accusations. Chad kicks things off sharing his family experience at a Metallica concert, complete with insights about musical authenticity that sets up the episode's central theme of appearances versus reality.
What follows is the remarkable story of a client they call "Jimmy the Justified" – a working man whose life collapsed after being falsely accused of rape following a dispute with an escort. When Chad visited him to complete paperwork, he found Jimmy sitting in his vehicle with a gun, contemplating ending his life. That pivotal moment transformed their professional relationship from bondsmen to lifesavers.
The podcast reveals how investigative work beyond typical bail bonding duties – securing hotel security footage showing the accuser's calm demeanor after the alleged incident – ultimately exonerated Jimmy. This crucial evidence, which contradicted the accusation narrative, highlights why rushing to judgment based solely on media reports of charges can devastate lives prematurely.
Chad and Rob don't just tell Jimmy's story; they use it to illuminate systematic problems with media coverage of accusations, explaining how charges like "kidnapping" might technically apply to minor situations yet create devastating public perceptions. They emphasize that while some defendants are certainly guilty, many others face charges that don't reflect the full truth of their situations.
This episode serves as both a fascinating case study and a powerful reminder about compassion and judgment. Whether you're interested in the criminal justice system, media ethics, or simply powerful human stories, this raw, honest conversation offers a perspective rarely heard in public discourse about crime accusations. Have you ever jumped to conclusions about someone based on charges reported in the media? This episode might make you think twice.
When people are released from jail, they have the responsibility to appear in court, but some of these people choose to go on the run.
Speaker 2:They go back home to mommy.
Speaker 1:And that is when these guys come into the picture. So sit back and listen to the Off the Hook podcast with chad and rob very fine people on both sides. These are real stories, but the names have been changed what's going on, guys?
Speaker 2:I'm rob, I'm chad what's up. Ah, same old, same man. Exciting weekend for us both, but I want to hear from you, man.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah, I went to Charlotte this weekend and got my son to experience. The whole family we went and experienced the Metallica concert.
Speaker 2:Oh, gosh man, you sent me some videos. I was all excited, and so how was the?
Speaker 3:bands. So I'm a big Pantera fan. I was going to wear my shirt today but kind of sweated in it.
Speaker 2:It was beautiful.
Speaker 3:You couldn't ask for a better evening there. Honestly, I think it was a high of 81, right, you know, and uh, it was just, it was awesome. But I think the doors opened at like five and it had three bands. They had suicidal tendencies which not a lot of people listening, uh, unless you're on the west coast know those guys. Um, they, uh, they're an old skateboard band from like from the 80s.
Speaker 3:Yeah, yeah and uh, dude, still still going, I'm, I'm surprised. But yeah, yeah, like I got some neighbors from california we're just telling them yesterday and they're like, oh, yeah, I remember them, you know, back in the day. But uh, yeah, they did their thing. And then, um, it was, it was not completely packed in there, which I was surprised, but it was like early and I that's been forever since I've been in concert, so now you're at bank of america stadium now.
Speaker 3:I was there last year where, the, where, the, where the panthers play. Yeah, yeah, so that's the Panther Stadium. It was huge, huge place, beautiful, and waiting for the next one, pantera, to come out, right, like it's an oval track in the center and like they had the drums set up for each three bands, so three corners of it basically. So it's kind of like potluck, where you're going to get, you know Metallica to end up or, my case, pantera.
Speaker 2:Right, right right.
Speaker 3:And Phil Phil comes out. You know, F this F that he's dropping F bombs left and right. Not real kid friendly. You know, with the, with the, the vulgar display of power. Yeah, Quote an album of Pantera. Right, you're listening. Some of you guys, some of you guys will get this man. Yeah, pantera is is just with zach wilde oh dude, how was he man?
Speaker 2:I saw some, I saw for those of you who don't know who he is, he played for um ozzy yeah, so like he is an incredible guitarist man, I, I was telling you this morning when we were talking about it. I was like man, I play guitar, but I don't understand how he plays it.
Speaker 3:He came out in like these orange boots and like black gear. You know they all wear black, but these crazy looking boots on and he's just got you. Look up rocker, and he is in the dictionary for right, the, the rocker guy the beautiful long hair. Um, meanwhile got a big, big, you know, go to and just just, and he's got like tributes on his vest right to don bagdaro, who you know died.
Speaker 3:He was the one who got shot on stage, on stage by a fan well, wasn't really a good fan, but somebody shot him and killed him. And then they lost vinnie paul, the drummer yeah, well, benny paul was with hell.
Speaker 2:Yeah, with chad gray from mud vein. They were here not too long ago and I worked security for him and vinnie paul man, he was a drinker.
Speaker 3:Yeah, he was heavy. Well, he was following John Bonham's footsteps, I think, kind of that. And what's the guy? There was another real crazy guy that sported on country-type music, kind of Johnny Cash-ish type music, the Red Clay Strings.
Speaker 2:No no.
Speaker 3:I can't remember the guy's name, but anyway, let's skip that. But yeah, man, zach Wild, he was awesome to watch play. He just gets in this stance and he just, you know, hair's flowing and you know like what you think of when you go to one of those, and it was fun to look over and see my son, you know, smiling. He's at the age where he's you know.
Speaker 3:know, I don't see a lot of smiles, it's like you know teenagers, yeah young teenagers, so it was really cool so now, after after pantera played in metallica came out, the place was packed by then so, yeah, it was starting to get dark and like they had these huge monitors hanging, like there probably were eight of them, maybe something like that, and they're just huge and they would play like for each band.
Speaker 3:They would have like stuff, stuff you know, yeah, their production yeah, yeah, so you can look at that and people way up in the stands, you know they can look at that and see up close and stuff like that. So, um, it's getting a little, you know, starting to get a little darker. And now it's time for Metallica, the main show, right, and they do this thing. That's, it's like a Western thing.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, the good bad.
Speaker 3:What is it the good bad? And the ugly? Yeah, clint Eastwood movie and everybody's just like anticipation.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:And you hear the drums and like they finally come out and this place erupts it. The drums and like they finally come out and this place erupts. It's full. By now I mean it's.
Speaker 2:There's not a seat available in the stadium and it's a huge stadium and on the floor every there's people down there all right, so tell me the the little thing, but I saw it online through tiktok for you know, and you only get like a few seconds, but you were there about when it was raining.
Speaker 3:Okay, yeah, there was. There was a part apparently. What was the guy's name? I told you earlier, you knew the guy's name. Somebody died Cliff Burton.
Speaker 2:Cliff Burton Okay.
Speaker 3:He died and evidently that was in tribute to him. And they started this song and it started to rain by the time they were finished it this song and it started to rain by the time they were finished. It was a light rain, it's very light, very light. I mean you could feel, you know, drops and you're like you're thinking it's going to get worse. By the song was over, it quit completely, it didn't rain anymore that was it.
Speaker 2:Did they say anything on stage about that?
Speaker 3:no, no, but I've seen lots of clips and social media about it. You know how it just started at the beginning of the song and it ended at the end of the song, like it was symbolic or dude was right. You know something, who knows, but it was kind of cool I, I dug that. That's pretty cool so, pan, I mean, you know I like metallica, um, I do like them, but I was there for pantera but right um, metallica just rocked it dude, they've been going for so long.
Speaker 2:I mean, their show is just so well put together well, you have the best in the business doing these productions, man, and there's so much that goes into it. It is not funny, I just I. I would love to see the electricity bill from one of them.
Speaker 3:Things, man hang on, dude, they had. Uh, toward the end they let out something like 30 of these giant balls on the in the crowd oh yes, all that yeah yeah, there was probably, I guess 30 at least, and they were just like and they're not little like beach balls, these are. Things are like as big as a person, as tall and round, and like there was 30 black and yellow.
Speaker 2:Black and yellow.
Speaker 3:Black and yellow. So their tour is 72 seasons is what it's called. And, yeah, I thought about getting them a shirt and I'm like, screw that, the lines were so long and it was miserable going to the bathroom in that place. I mean it's packed, yeah. So I think I made two bathroom breaks. That was it. I held it. Yeah, and getting out of there was a nightmare. You know, I ubered it. You know in and out, but it was a nightmare getting out. But that's that many people would expect yeah, I mean it's typical, but you had a good time.
Speaker 3:It's a good experience, and your son had a good time. The family had a good time.
Speaker 2:So can't, can't you know? Yeah, I can't hold a candle to that one buddy I had. We had a good time, the family had a good time, so can't, can't you know? Yeah, I can't hold a candle to that one buddy I had. We had a 50th uh anniversary for my girlfriend's parents. At the house, my band played and we had uh my buddy come out. He, his wife's, got like a bartending business and they came out and did that uh and we cooked 140 pound hog and 40 pounds of chicken and fed a little over 100 people and had a good time. But it's funny because I was sitting there. I was at the party we're hosting, so me and Heather are all over the place and I keep getting these videos, I'm like, from you.
Speaker 3:Well, the thing was there's so many people sending videos and doing videos.
Speaker 2:It was hard to get out of there.
Speaker 3:It was hard to send a video out, so I might have sent you one, you sent me two. It didn't happen. You didn't get it until much later.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah. And I'm like, I'm up there. I was actually the first one. I wasn't on stage yet and I was like, and somebody was talking to me, I was sitting there watching Pantera go. I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then the second one you sent me, I was on stage. I was like, oh my God, I want to see that video so bad. But I can't. I'm so done with playing man.
Speaker 3:I tell you what I mean everybody was on their feet, even though you're sitting in stadium seats most people, unless the one's on the floor, but for whom the bell tolls. And when that came on, they had on those monitors big giant bells ringing.
Speaker 2:Did they play?
Speaker 3:battery People. Yeah, I mean they, just everybody got up and you know it was like it was awesome man. Gosh man and they they close it out with. You know the song.
Speaker 2:Oh, speaking of hang on before.
Speaker 3:I play it. Yeah, I got to open it.
Speaker 2:Okay, all right, I got to open it for today's story. All right, all right. Openers for today's story. His name is Jimmy. I guess we'll name him. Here we go.
Speaker 3:This was the closer, yeah, and a place went wild when it came out. Fire was going off and yeah, is that actually from it? No, that was just another, but I mean a lot of times you're disappointed. In my view, today's music sucks and there's too many people that have machines that make them sound better, clear them up. There's not, in my opinion, true talent. You got somebody else that writes your music. All you got to do is dance and look good well, yeah, so for the most part.
Speaker 2:I'm saying there are exceptions, yeah all right, so back in the day. All right, so back in the day, like for, like you know, chris Staples' big hit Tennessee Whiskey. Yeah, that was written way back by Dean Dillon.
Speaker 3:Yeah, exactly, that's all this music. I mean he sounds great singing it. Yeah, it's not his. Yeah, you know. And actually Metallica did one. That's not theirs too, god, what was it? I heard it actually going home and I was like wait a minute, that's not theirs, but it sounds good they're singing it. Oh, tuesday's gone, probably, no, no, Uh, wait a minute.
Speaker 2:Yes, yeah, tuesday's gone Cause that was Bob Seger. That was right about Bob Seger. Yes, so, and Bob, like people back much from back in the 80s to now. Yeah, it's a lot different. Like, like my favorite guy kenny, he writes some of his songs, a lot of his songs, like, uh, like old dominion, they've written songs for him and then he's written so they all like bounce off each other.
Speaker 3:I gotta, you know, include you people in a lot of a lot of these people that you see today. They don't write their own stuff, they have ghostwriters, right? Yeah, I mean, we actually bonded a guy out years ago. He was a ghostwriter for country music and like, that's all he does.
Speaker 2:But there's a ton of writers out there. Yeah, there's a ton of them.
Speaker 3:But, like I said, a lot of these people you know Metallica's true talent that they play their own instruments, that's rare.
Speaker 2:You know you don. They play their own instruments. That's rare. You don't see a lot of that. Keith Whitley back in the 80s. He's a country singer but he wrote a lot of his own stuff.
Speaker 3:There are exceptions. Don't get me wrong, but I'm saying the majority of what you hear on the radio is trash. I agree they're not. They didn't write it. If you hear them live you'd be like really that's a sign of real talent if you can write it and sing like it sounds well these guys sound exactly like you put a cd in or played it off, or whatever so you're telling you're.
Speaker 2:So you're telling me beyonce not a good country, no, no not good not good
Speaker 3:she's not she's horrible stay in your lane, yeah stay in your lane um speaking of stay in your lane it's the month of june, it's june, it's june, that's about it. Um, yeah, actually, um, it's um, um. You call it military awareness month. I've heard oh yeah, that's that's what happens in June, nothing else. I don't zero, else I don't get why they got the months and like during the year Do you need a month? Do you need a flag to tell who you like to get it on with?
Speaker 2:Why can't you just be a decent person Just?
Speaker 3:do what you do and like a decent.
Speaker 2:We don't. You just do what you do. We don't need a flag a parade a month.
Speaker 3:You don't need all that. You don't need it.
Speaker 2:How about just be a good person? Yeah, how about that?
Speaker 3:It's not groomer month. We're not going down that path, we're not having it. So that's all I got to say about June Enjoy.
Speaker 2:June everyone I am I'm going to be on an island, probably next weekend, relaxing.
Speaker 1:All right.
Speaker 3:So this next story here that we got for you is we're going to change it up, man, we're going to change it up from our typical going to go get you to an actual like.
Speaker 2:Bell bonding.
Speaker 3:Beginning to end story on what happened to a client at their lowest Right. You know a lot of these people that we bond out, we don't get to hear the end story. But you know we're also PIs so we got to go through this one from beginning to end Right so we thought we'd like to tell this one. This one's before you.
Speaker 2:Yep.
Speaker 3:Before you, Yep, Before you came along. But it's a really cool because actually it relates to a big bond. We just did over the weekend Very similar situation. And here's the thing I get so sick and tired of our local TV station. I'll name names WWAY and WECT. They like to Paint a story that's not the actual story.
Speaker 3:Take a story put it in their social media and just let people tear them to shreds over the charges. They don't know anything else other than those charges and therefore it sounds horrible. You know, thank God there are people like us as bondsmen and PIs that will actually go, and, you know, if you were stuck with these charges and you knew this wasn't your fault, you didn't do all this. You might I mean, you would want somebody on your side, right, right, you know, and that's what we do. We can't judge because we don't know, and you know this one we got to know. But you can't judge a person just solely on what they're charged with. But they love putting in social media to get those clicks and those comments, and that's what I can't stand that the TV stations here do, and that's what it's all about. And people eagerly tear them apart without knowing the story. And so this is a story about a man that we bonded out and we saw it all the way through, to the end, to the very end and you probably saved his life.
Speaker 3:Actually, yeah, we'll tell that in the story too. So let's begin story time about Jimmy, jimmy the Justified. Yes, we will call him. Yes, jimmy the Justified.
Speaker 2:I'm going to sit back and listen to Chad here. I have some questions, all right.
Speaker 3:Do I got my story time. We just did it.
Speaker 2:Oh, that was okay, All right.
Speaker 3:Well, that'll work All right. So Jimmy years ago was in a real bad situation. He worked far from home here in North Carolina.
Speaker 3:Um, far from home here in North Carolina, Um, he would go for like a month or so at a time away from his home and his and his wife and uh, he, he had a very, you know, tough job, but that's how he, how he made his money, how he worked, Stayed in a hotel here in the area and uh, well, I guessmy had a couple drinks and he decided he was gonna call a call girl, you know. And uh, girl came to the hotel and uh, evidently they had a dispute over money or something like that. Don't know wasn't there so I don't can't tell you, but that's how the story went thanks for $20 for that.
Speaker 3:I don't know if his drug related I don't, I think it was something else related but evidently they had an argument and she claimed that he raped her, which we see a lot of yeah, yeah. So you know, it's kind of like I guess she's like, well, he's not gonna say anything goes. You know, it's kind of like I guess she's like, well, he's not going to say anything because you know he's married, he's married and it's only going to make it worse for him, right? So what happened was the police came and arrested him. He had a large bond. I mean it was several hundred thousands of dollars. I can't remember exact dollar amount, but it was up there, and so we did a little bit of PI work on this one.
Speaker 2:This was with another partner on this one. Now, did he call you directly or did the attorney call? Was trying to?
Speaker 3:I think he called directly and uh no, he had been in jail for a little bit of a time, gotcha, and this came through, uh, another source. But so, after reviewing what was going on more, it's more evident, of what's going on now the story's already out in the news, right? You know that this guy and they tear up, told him, tear him to shreds.
Speaker 2:Do you mean trafficker? Did they say that?
Speaker 3:No, but it was a rape charge.
Speaker 2:Oh, okay, so it just made him look like a womanizer, like a rapist.
Speaker 3:You know all that, that they's going to tear them apart. Yeah, right, yeah. So, anyway, we ended up doing the bond and he owns his property back where he lives, but this is causing problems with the wife, right, yeah? And now she says oh, you know, well, I had to go up there and meet with him and do some more paperwork and, you know, collect money for the bond that we put out.
Speaker 2:I wonder how that conversation went between him and his wife.
Speaker 3:Apparently his or her, I think it was his parents were involved too. When I got there, guy was sitting in his car, had a gun on his lap and was crying Wow, and his world was crumbling, you know, and uh, I had to talk to him and you know I, you don't know what the person's gonna do so.
Speaker 3:You were a therapist at the moment at the moment I became a therapist and, uh, had to talk him down off of that ledge, so to speak, and we went inside and I gave the gun to his parents and they took him in. I think they took him away from the house and they he stayed with them for a while and I separated the wife and, anyway, some time went by, we went, I went back and at the time our other partner he had the case for this Went back to the hotel and this was a key bit of information that really helped him in his court case, because right now it's a he said, she said case as far as it's concerned, right, and they take the woman's side, you know, for the rape situation A hundred percent, like literally majority of the time.
Speaker 2:the courts take the woman's side Right. All the time.
Speaker 3:The men get the short end of the stick on that. So, going back to the hotel, hotels have cameras all in them right, right, so going back to the hotel hotels have cameras all in them, right?
Speaker 3:So a partner went and spoke to the front desk clerk about that date and he said you know, can we have the footage? You know, we need to subpoena this footage for court. It was in the evening on some date. Anyway, the footage revealed that the girl came downstairs you can see her on the camera. The front desk clerk, you know, spoke to her briefly. The footage revealed that the girl came downstairs you can see her on the camera. The front desk clerk spoke to her briefly have a good night. She's like yeah, thanks, you have a good night too.
Speaker 3:No-transcript, nonchalant, nonchalant chatting with somebody hey, have a good night would you be crying and, like you know, you know right, so that right there spoke volumes right about what truly happened and that was a huge piece of evidence that I'm sure they brought up the girl's past too.
Speaker 3:I'm sure she, I'm sure she had yeah was actually we dug into that and found out her history and that added to it. So all of it put together it was very evident, put a lot of doubt. It was very evident that that's what happened in this situation. So after some time and he had a very good attorney after that evidence he was cleared of this wrongdoing. Now I mean that's one huge obstacle, but the other issue was his wife in this situation.
Speaker 2:All right. So that's what I was going to ask you about. What about the wife? What happened with the wife?
Speaker 3:Well, so things were. You know, he's really upset, wanted to keep his wife, you know, happy and everything. Well, it turned out after a little bit of investigative work that she wasn't exactly being monogamous with him either. What was she doing? Apparently she had a thing with her um friend from work. Oh, they would meet up and bots and switch vehicles and you know that sort of thing.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah.
Speaker 3:So after a good bit of time um helping this guy out, clearing his case, well, now he was cleared of anything with his wife, as far as you know. Now he yeah, he called a girl. He didn't do anything in the beginning.
Speaker 2:Ah, because it was in the court records that they didn't do nothing. It was an argument about money. Right, right, Gotcha oh.
Speaker 3:I see, but not the case with the wife oh, she was banging judy yeah, so the guy from work you know, and her, and so I guess while he was gone on these trips, wow, he was the only one, wow, you know. So he ended up keeping the house, kicking the wife out and not having to pay anything. But man, he had to go through all that crap, though he went from his lowest sitting in a driveway in his car with a gun on his lap.
Speaker 2:About to take his own life About to take his own life to getting everything. You know what the good Lord put you there for a reason, getting everything.
Speaker 3:You know what the good Lord. The good Lord put you there for a reason, and that was. That's one of the stories you know that people need to understand about what we do. It's not I say it over and over we don't just go meet you at the jail and take money we give you a lot of good advice.
Speaker 3:We try to give you advice. We can't steer you to you know, an good advice. We try to give you advice. We can't steer you to you know an attorney, or anything like that. But we say, you know, fit with me. Or you know, I had this situation. This was what I would look at doing, um, or you know, in our case we're able to actually help with a case through an attorney or privately, if need be. You know, so yeah. If need be, you know, so yeah. I mean that that should give you something to think about. When you hear these stories in the news, you see a picture of a person looking really rough and they're mugshot, right right, they're at their lowest now.
Speaker 2:I'm not saying that some of these people aren't guilty as hell, because they are yeah, but know that, like before you start slamming people, but you kind of need to know the story because, yes, because the charges, they'll charge somebody with this horrible charge. It sounds horrible and it's got nothing to do like that they, it's got nothing to do with it and it's not right.
Speaker 3:yeah, I mean even like a charge like, uh, kidnapping, that can be as easy as no. You're not going to picking somebody up from the edge of their yard to a sidewalk, Right, that can be. You know, you took them out of their property to a public domain. That can be considered kidnapping, yeah, Technically. So I mean there are, you know, I think you need to look a little deeper into to what it is. Um, so I mean there are, you know you need to look a little deeper into what it is.
Speaker 2:That's all I'm saying, man, wow. So I wonder how old Jimmy's doing now.
Speaker 3:I don't know, but he was very thankful.
Speaker 2:I'm sure he was At the end of all this.
Speaker 3:But that's one of those stories, man. It just makes you feel good of what you're doing and that you're truly making you know, helping somebody, right, you know um well, I, I'm glad.
Speaker 2:Oh, speaking of helping somebody, I didn't. I didn't tell you this. I got, uh, you know, that court case. Uh, I said I told a story about it, about the girl going from jacksonville to alabama no, from mississippi, the mississippi to california. About the girl going from Jacksonville to Alabama no, from Mississippi to California. The girl, the child, was oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. So we found they had their court case last week and I didn't have to go to court. I was wondering why I didn't get a phone call, because the report that I wrote was sufficient enough for the judge. The judge said don't bother the man, his report's perfect. Nice, come to find out. So my client, the restraining order got thrown away. My client got 50-50 custody of his child and she's got to do a lot of stuff to show that she's stable. Because she's not. Yeah, this is the girl that took off stable, because she's not.
Speaker 3:Yeah, this is the girl that took off and ended up, uh, in California, yep, and Alan Horner helped us. Uh, yeah, that's right, alan, if you're listening. Buddy, thank you again.
Speaker 2:Alan.
Speaker 3:It's good working with you. Um would like to do some other this stuff with you sometime. You need to be on the show, since we had Alex Price, I think who wants to be on?
Speaker 2:Yeah, and ever since we had a few of these couple of special guests, people have been like hey we got more lined up, Absolutely.
Speaker 3:But yeah, we need to get up with you, Alan.
Speaker 2:Anyway that's a cool story, right? Yeah, man, it's a neat story and it kind of puts things in perspective about how the cops charge people versus what actually happened. So quit slandering if you don't know the whole story.
Speaker 3:Yeah yeah. Because it— you wouldn't want it to happen to you if the shoe were on the other foot. You know, you, you should. You know before you go condemning someone.
Speaker 2:I've had to learn. I've had to learn that myself over the years.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I've not. You know well, you've been in, you know long enough to where. You see where this this comes into play. It's not as cut and dry as oh, those are the charges. They're guilty. Brian man, you know, don't do that Well.
Speaker 2:I'm glad that. Uh, I'm glad he's all right. You might need to look him up here soon See how he's doing. Yeah.
Speaker 3:Yeah, um, yeah, I hope he's doing well, but so we have a very similar situation. Um, that's what made me think of that story that happened over the weekend. We think it's very similar to this one. So we'll see, but anyway, I thought that was a nice change up from her.
